Four USD 204 students are participating in the Special Olympics this summer in Minneapolis, Minnesota! They are playing for Team Kansas on the Unified Soccer Team.

It will be a week-long event with an opening ceremony, competitions, and closing ceremony. The 2026 Special Olympics USA Games will bring together 3,000 athletes, 1,500 coaches, 10,000 volunteers, and 75,000 fans from all 50 states.

Through the power of sports and inclusion, the Special Olympics USA Games will spark a change that transforms lives, communities, and the world.

Congratulations to Debbie Elmer, Transportation Director, who was named the Bonner Springs Edwardsville Area Chamber of Commerce Staff Member of the Month at yesterday's luncheon!

Each month, the Chamber recognizes a teacher for their outstanding service, but this month, they recognized an integral part of our school district - our Transportation Director, Debbie Elmer.

Mrs. Elmer has demonstrated a passion for the students and the district she serves for the last 41 years!

Over the last 41 years, Mrs. Debbie Elmer has exemplified excellence, dedication, and unwavering commitment to our school district as a bus driver and then eventually as Director of Transportation. Through changing times and numerous challenges, her leadership has ensured the safe and reliable transportation of literally GENERATIONS of students.

Debbie’s professionalism, knowledge of all things transportation, and tireless dedication to USD 204 has set a high standard - not only for our district, but for the profession itself! It’s no exaggeration to say she’s been the best at what she does, and we are incredibly fortunate to have benefitted from her dedication for so many years.

Mrs. Elmer will be retiring at the end of June, and we want to wish her all the best. Congratulations, Debbie Elmer, USD 204 Transportation Director, on being recognized as the May Chamber of Commerce School Staff Member of the Month!

BSHS junior Angelina Gutierrez was honored at this year's Congressional Art Competition Reception held at Lenexa City Hall this past Friday!

Representing Sharice Davids and District 3, Angelina exhibited a mixed media work done with colored pencil and marker. Community Liaison Ben Muiller for the Office of Representative Davids welcomed guests and introduced the judge for the competition. Sharice Davids sent a video congratulating and honoring the participants and announcing the winning student! Please congratulate Angelina for her submission and participation.

Next up, Angelina will be participating in the Frontier League Arts competition this Wednesday at Paola High School where she will exhibit four works of art and compete in the chalk art challenge!

Congratulations to Chasitee Sambol - Valedictorian:

Chasitee Sambol plans to attend college, where she will continue her athletic career in basketball, though she is still undecided on her specific path. Throughout high school, she has been actively involved in volleyball, basketball, track and field, National Honor Society, Orange Crush, Diversity, KAY Club, Prom Committee, and the Superintendent’s Advisory Council.

Reflecting on her journey, Chasitee shares, “I want to thank my family, of course, Madilock, and myself for keeping my expectations high.”

BSE 2nd graders worked with BSHS students in Mr. Mellick's classes to build bird feeders! This was a fun way to wrap up the second grade unit on animals and get a preview of the wood shop in the BTEC building!

Great job to Mr. Mellick and his students for preparing kits to build each bird feeder and partnering with 2nd graders! The bird feeders will be distributed to various community partners this spring, so be on the look out!

BSHS senior Yailyn Corrales raised money through her senior project and donated $200 to the BSHS Diversity Ambassadors in return! Yailyn created her own business doing nails as her senior project, and worked closely with Ms. Benton who worked as her mentor and marketing/promotions advisor.

Yailyn has been a part of the Diversity Ambassadors all four years of high school and said the group made such a big impact on her that she wanted to donate a portion of her profits to the group to do her part in giving back.

This past Saturday the Bonner Springs Unified Soccer teams competed in a Tournament in Olathe. The tournament had 16 teams throughout the KC Metro region participate, and all three Bonner Springs teams took 1st place with standout performances by Makhai Ezell and Luis Picazo each having 7 goals!

Makhai was named player of the game and received an individual trophy for his accomplishments, and Abby Gossage, Jovahn Harrell and Kevaugh Stewart all had 5 goals each.

This is the first time all three teams have dominated a tournament, great job Bonner Springs Unified Soccer athletes!
